YARMOUTH - The damage from a Nov. 29 fire above Supernova Power Yoga on Main Street in Yarmouth could have been a lot worse, but it was still enough to require extensive renovations.

The blaze originated in the upstairs tattoo shop (New Addiction) and after investigation the cause has been deemed underdetermined.

Kate Giglio, who owns the building and Supernova Power Yoga with her husband Joe, says they were grateful for the person who called 911 and reported the fire in time for the building to be saved.

An unavoidable consequence, however, was extensive water damage in the downstairs yoga studio that ruined a newly installed pine floor.

“There was four to six inches of water on the floor when we arrived,” said Giglio. “We thought that when it dried out it would be fine, but the insurance company said all of it had to be pulled up in addition to the subfloor.”

The electrical wiring was damaged as well from smoke and water and it took two weeks to have the building rewired.

Although classes continued to be taught upstairs at the start of the new year, Giglio says they’re excited to reopen downstairs.

“It feels like we’ve been away from home,” she said. One of the things she’s looking forward to returning to is the radiant heating system that was installed before the fire and wasn’t damaged.

“It feels like the sun is on your skin. It’s a nurturing heat,” she said.

She had huge praise for Jenesis Interiors and Julie Mood for their part in the renovations.

“She volunteered her services to select colours and stained the whole floor downstairs,” said Giglio.

Renovations at Supernova Power Yoga are nearing completion. A Nov. 29 fire caused significant damage that required electrical rewiring, floor replacement and more.

There were many others who stepped up to help as well. They helped both physically and emotionally.

“It’s been stressful. You never realize when something like this comes up what it’s going to bring and how it’s going to make you feel. But we’ve had the support of our community. We really felt the love,” said Giglio.

The owners reopened the downstairs studio on Saturday, Jan. 12 and will be holding a grand reopening celebration on Feb. 2 (10 a.m. to 1 p.m.) with free workshops and classes, including beginner’s yoga and men’s yoga. A power class will also be held and info presented on the 40 Days to Personal Revolution program that starts Feb. 7.

“We’ll have treats and balloons and it will just be a celebration for everyone who’s supported us in the past and now,” said Giglio.
